Victorian duck season cancellation

Many WGAA members will have been disappointed with the announcement that the duck season has been cancelled for 2008. The SSAA argued for a sectional opening - east of the Hume & south of the Western highways. Conditions in these regions are satisfactory enough to have allowed a limited season - especially in the Gippsland region where there have been two floods in the past 9 months. Field & Game Australia andthe Hunting Advisory Committee also argued for a duck season. However, the Minister was swayed mainly by the advice of Dr Kingsford, who did his annual fly over of less than 10% of Eastern Australia in October, and who concluded there was not enough water and not enough ducks.
A fuller report on some of the issues behind the duck season cancellation will be available in the February edition of The Victorian Shooter and on the SSAA (Vic) website.
Reports are that the quail season will proceed normally from 1 April to the last Saturday in June
